Margoum et Tapis
Le Margoum is a rug like no other. The word Margoum itself is a beautiful name for a unique rug that goes beyond your expectations to fall in with more than your décor. It’s a whole ancient culture born in Tunisia and expressed through the art of weaving unique in Tunisia. Its origin is Berber – a tribe that inhabited the Southern part of Tunisia.
The Margoum is solely made by hand from ancient times till nowadays. Although all traditional in design and weave, its variations express the regions where it is made, boasting its diversity in art, textures, styles and designs.
A Margoum made in Kairoun is different from one made in ElJem, and different again from the ones made in the Southern parts of Tunisia.
The Margoum reflect such an impact that makes our living rooms beautiful whatever our décor desires are.
How to recognise a Margoum?
You can tour the whole world, but you will never come across such a distinctive rug. It’s only in Tunisia that you will find such specific item. It resembles a hand knotted rug in appearance and also looks like a hand woven Kelim.
In reality if you would like to compare, you’ll find out that it’s thinner than the knotted rug and substantially thicker than a Kelim.
The Margoum is always made in wool woven on cotton. The method is always traditional. In principal, it’s made like a Kelim, the design embroidered by way of knots, just like a classic rug, but in reverse, you only need to turn it over to see the wool thread knotted in reverse order. The main motif of Margoum is the Diamond shape. This shape is nothing else but the symbol of the fertility among the Berbers.
